SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE IN THE HORTICULTURE

SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE IN THE HORTICULTURE

TG Drains has expanded their services to include drainage in the horticulture. In the Queensland area we have been installing subsurface drainage in in crops like bananas, sugar cane, grapes, pineapples, mangoes etc. Well drained soil increases plant nutrient uptake. This is because in waterlogged soils, which are associated with low oxygen levels, plants produce less of the energy required to uptake nutrients from the soil. Plant roots become stunted or killed and can no longer supply the plant with the necessary water, nutrients and anchorage.

When installing subsurface drainage in orchards or plantations we use a self propelled tracked gravel cart, which drives behind the drainage machine, to deliver the gravel into the drainage machine's hopper. Alternatively it can be used instead of our tractor pulled gravel trailer if conditions are very wet.

Installation of appropriate drainage systems reduces the length of time that the soil remains waterlogged resulting in the following benefits:

  • Increased crop yields.
  • Improved trafficability  for operation of harvesting and transport equipment.
  • Subsurface drainage combats the problems of land degradation and salinity resulting from high water tables.
  • Drainage also improves the timeline of many farming operations as waterlogging of the soil limits the time available for sowing and ground based weed and insect pest control.
  • Subsurface drainage can also lessen the incidence of soil borne diseases such as fusarium and phytophera root rot.
